Tech Talent Retention - Connect & Develop!

As a technology leader in a very competitive job market, it’s your responsibility to build and continuously engage the most epic team possible. Tech talents are at the forefront of and have become core contributors to business emancipation in the new digital age, making your role all the more important.

Tech Talent Tip #2

Retention: Consistently provide development opportunities to your tech talent!

Compensation and benefits are no longer the holy grail as to whether people decide to join an organization (or leave the job), as per LinkedIn’s Job Switcher report. You need to remain competitive, of course, but on their own, great compensation and/or benefits will not be enough to get your tech talent to stick around for the long run. Opportunities to develop a career has recently become the most important factor on both attracting talent and subsequently retaining them.

Providing customized learning opportunities that inspire and engage every single employee is a good place to start. But to do this, you need to first and foremost connect with them and discuss their career and development interests. Guard against simply providing generic opportunities you think would be appreciated; ensure you consult employees individually before investing time and money to deploy such initiatives. And not only once a year - hold at least quarterly conversations on the matter and on their progress.

By investing in each employee’s development, you’re helping them get closer to achieving career goals. And that’s a good thing, as 78 percent of employees say they would remain longer with an employer that provided a clear career path, according to a recent Mercer report. The same report also indicates that employees who don’t believe they can achieve their career goals with a current employer are 12 times more likely to consider leaving. With new employees, the number skyrockets to about 30 times more likely.
